Background to this jewellery project.

We are constantly looking for ways of making money to fund The Lion and Tusk Museum. Some of you will have heard about our "Jewellery Project" and may have seen some of the bracelets and earrings that have been made from old Tickeys (threepenny and two and a half cent Rhodesian coins) as well as some five cent Zimbabwe coins that we purchased many years ago.

This project has taken far more time than was originally envisaged. It is proving to be very labour intensive as well as having to improve on existing skills and learn a whole lot of jewellery related terms and products. Two of our members are working on the designing, soldering, polishing and assembeling side of things and are being supported by a number of people and local businesses who are advising and contributing to the project to who we are most grateful.

As we progressed with things, we have widened the range of jewellery products that we think will be popular. Originally we only planned to produce a limited number of items from original coins, however, seeing the very pleasing results, other ideas developed and we extended the project. We are now:

  • Casting copy tickeys in silver in New Zealand;
  • Making tickey necklaces and bracelets;
  • Making necklaces and bracelets from copper pennies and other Rhodesian and Zimbabwean coins;
  • Designed a range of Flame Lily earrings and necklaces;
  • Designed and made in New Zealand a tie pin and cuff link set.

If you have any coins, especially copper pennies, that you would like to contribute to the project you can drop them at The Lion and Tusk Museum or send to PO Box 13003, Tauranga 3141, New Zealand. NOTE: If you are sending from overseas please declare contents as "Coins - NOT legal tender" and value under NZD 100. Your donation will help to fund preservation of Rhodesian history.
